This beautiful sculpture is one of a set of three that are designed to be displayed together. The three monkeys - 'see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil' are the visual embodiment of an ancient Japanese proverb dating back to the 16th Century.
The female chimpanzee bears a single young at any time of the year after a gestation period of about eight months. The newborn is almost helpless and clings to the fur of the mother's belly as she moves. For the first 5 months of its life, the baby chimp is carried everywhere by its mother. It begins to walk at about 6 months but is dependent on Mom for at leat two years, sometimes still riding on her back.
This lovely creature is designed and sculpted in England by Matt Buckley at his studios in Shropshire, Edge Sculpture is a collection influenced by style rather than subject.
