The female chimpanzee bears a single young at any time of the year after a gestation period of about eight months.  The newborn is almost helpless and clings to the fur of the mother's belly as she moves.  For the first 5 months of its life, the baby chimp is carried everywhere by its mother.  It begins to walk at about 6 months but is dependent on Mom for at leat two years, sometimes still riding on her back.
